Celebrating Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month – meet Brian Chen
This year, the theme for Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month is ‘Advancing Leaders through Innovation’, which echoes our Barrios culture of ‘dedicating our efforts to achieving the mission of our customers and delivering superior performance through our innovative and passionate workforce’.
Brian Chen, Mission Planning and Integration Engineer on our Human Space Flight Technical Integration Contract (HSFTIC) is one such individual. His role involves supporting NASA Increment Management in providing programmatic oversight and direction during both the planning and execution phases for ISS operations.
According to Brian, AANHPI Heritage Month is an opportunity to recognize the richness of these communities, their resilience in the face of adversity, and their integral role in shaping the cultural, social, and economic landscape of the United States. “It’s a reminder to acknowledge the struggles and challenges faced by AANHPI individuals, as well as the progress that has been made in advancing equity and inclusion.
“My Asian American identity involves a complex interplay of cultures, languages, and histories. This involves celebrating cultural festivals, practicing traditional customs and cuisines, and maintaining connections within my ethnic community. At the same time, it entails confronting stereotypes, discrimination, and challenges related to assimilation and belonging.”
Brian also gives back to the community by volunteering personal time at the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Greater Houston. He was recently a recipient of a Barrios EMY Grant of $1,000 donated to RMHC in his name to recognize and support Ronald McDonald House in Houston. EMY Grants recognizes Barrios employees who demonstrate our core value of Social Responsibility.
“For over a year, I’ve had the privilege of volunteering at Holcombe House nestled within the Texas Medical Center. “It has been immensely rewarding to play a role in preserving the unity of families during their most trying times and keeping them close to their child’s crucial medical care. Among the numerous impactful events, the annual Trafigura Run for the House holds a special place in my heart. This spirited 5k/10k run/walk not only promotes physical wellness but also serves as a powerful fundraiser to further the organization’s invaluable mission,” adds Brian.
